If you want to be part of the growing movement for Basic Income, you can Donate to the cause, Join the Mailing List or Join us on Facebook and Twitter.

The Canadian general election 2015 has been called for October 19th. Millions of Canadians already support Basic Income, with national and regional advocacy groups, a number of provincial political parties and other organisations all calling for its implementation. Now it’s your turn to join the movement, here is what you can do to put Basic Income at the centre of the Candian election debate.

1. Vote Basic Income

Currently, the federal parties which back Basic Income are:

Make sure to vote like other Basic Income supporters for parties that support this policy. This will encourage them to continue their support and encourage other parties to adopt the policy too.
(The Liberal Party conference adopted a motion in support of Basic Income, but the leadership has not mentioned the policy since.)

2. Tell your friends and family

Studies show the number one influence on a person’s decisions are the people closest to them. Tell them about Basic Income if they don’t know already, tell them the benefits of Basic Income, tell them why we need it now, the difference it could make in their lives and the scientific research in its favour. You could get them to vote Basic Income too.

3. Tell your candidates

Politicians follow the voters. If you show them how important Basic Income is to you and your peers, they’ll explore the idea and be more likely to support it. Here is a template letter you can send to your local candidate and here is a page to help you find your local candidate, just enter your postcode.

4. Get active

If you’re really dedicated, here is another page with even more ways people choose to promote Basic Income.

People power has always had a huge impact on politicians’ decisions, many others are getting involved in the Basic Income movement, you can become part of the push by taking action now!

Basic Income Now is a site dedicated to promoting awareness of and increasing activism for Basic Income. Right now we are a small, one-man show but after just a few months we have had thousands of views, nearly 500 Twitter followers and started the #BasicIncomeWorks hashtag. Amongst our followers are Natalie Bennett, the leader of the Green Party England and Wales and Peter Joseph, founder of the Zeitgeist movement.

To grow this site and be more effective at raising awareness and encouraging support of Basic Income, I need help from you. I have many plans for the future including improving the website design, shareable widgets, a Basic Income calculator, an image feed, designing and printing publications such as leaflets and flyers for real-world distribution as well as encouraging the foundation of new Basic Income groups worldwide.

To help me achieve those goals, you can donate a lump sum above, or donate €10 a month below, this money will be used to cover the costs associated with improving the site. You can be part of the growing movement towards Basic Income.

One of the most common problems for basic income cited is the fact that it is so expensive. I mean, if we are going to give ten to fifteen thousand dollars a year to everyone, that costs a lot of money! This gives many people a reason to claim that basic income is unfeasible. Today, I hope to put a dent in this myth by giving a somewhat detailed plan regarding how basic income can be funded. To give some disclaimers, I will admit, first of all, that I am not an expert on the federal budget, nor on tax policy, and as such, my ideas may have some limitations if put into practice. However, in theory at least, basic income is very feasible and would not break the bank. Continue reading
